Accessibility Statement
This website
St Michael’s C of E Primary School (“we”, “our”) is committed to making its website accessible and usable for all people, including those with disabilities. We believe that every pupil, parent, carer, member of staff or visitor should be able to access the information, services and features of our site in whichever way works best for them.

Compliance statement
We aim to comply with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard.
At present, the website is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA. There are areas where the website does not yet meet all the accessibility criteria, which are listed below. We are working to address these shortcomings.

Non-compliant areas
Based on our review, here are some of the specific areas where the site does not yet meet fully the accessibility standards:
  1. Alternative text / Images
    • Some images, especially older ones, may lack descriptive alt text. This means users of screen readers might not be able to get meaning from those images.
    • Some decorative images may not be properly marked as such, possibly leading to unnecessary noise for assistive technologies.
  2. Text contrast / readability
    • Certain text colours/background combinations do not meet the minimum contrast ratios required under WCAG AA.
    • When the site is zoomed (e.g., zooming in on content), some text or layout elements may not reflow well, causing horizontal scrolling or clipped text.
  3. Documents (PDFs, Word, etc.)
    • Many older documents on the site are not fully accessible to screen readers or assistive technologies. Headings, structure, or tags may not be present.
  4. Hyperlinks and navigation cues
    • In some places links are identified only by colour, without additional cues (underline, context, etc.), which can be hard for colourblind users or those using keyboard navigation.
    • The “skip to content” link or similar mechanisms may be missing or not sufficiently prominent, which makes keyboard navigation harder.
  5. Multimedia / Captions
    • Videos or audio content may not have transcripts or captions.
    • Frame titles or descriptions for embedded multimedia may be missing.
  6. Forms and interactive components
    • Some site forms may not provide full keyboard accessibility or appropriate focus indicators for users navigating without a mouse.
    • Error messages for form inputs may not be sufficiently visible or described in accessible manner.

Disproportionate burden / exemptions
  • As a primary school, we recognise some content is subject to exemptions under the 2018 Accessibility Regulations, e.g. content that is archival or rarely needed.
  • If making certain older content fully accessible would impose a disproportionate burden, we will endeavour to provide that content by alternative means (e.g. via email, large print, etc.).

What we’re doing to improve
We are undertaking the following actions to improve accessibility:
  • Regular audits of the site (both automated and manual) to identify accessibility issues.
  • Review and update of older images to add alt text or mark as decorative.
  • Reworking document uploads (PDFs etc.) so that they are created or remediated with accessibility in mind.
  • Improving contrast of text/background colour combinations site-wide.
  • Ensuring that all multimedia content includes appropriate captions/transcripts.
  • Enhancing keyboard navigation (skip links, focus indicators) and ensuring all navigation works without use of a mouse.
  • Training for staff responsible for uploading content to ensure awareness of accessibility best practises.
